When it premiered in 1944, The Glass Menagerie was a triumph for the American playwright Tennessee Williams, as his first major work to appear on Broadway. The play has strong autobiographical elements, featuring characters based on Williams himself, his dramatic mother, and his fragile sister, Laura. As the audience travels through Williams’ “memory play”, we learn that the Wingfield family’s lives are much like Laura’s glass menagerie-fanciful and delicate illusions.
Thomas Lanier “Tennessee” Williams III was an American playwright. He is considered among the three foremost playwrights in 20th-century American drama. After years of obscurity, he became suddenly famous with The Glass Menagerie (1944), closely reflecting his own unhappy family background. This heralded a string of successes, including A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), and Sweet Bird of Youth (1959). Much of Williams’ most acclaimed work was adapted for the cinema. He also wrote short stories, poetry, essays and a volume of memoirs. In 1979, four years before his death, Williams was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame.
STC’s production of The Glass Menagerie stars Janis Stevens as Amanda Wingfield, David Crane as Tom, Katherine Stroller as Laura, and Eric Craig as The Gentleman Caller. The production is directed by Casey McClellan. The design team includes Jarrod Bodensteiner and Renee DeGarmo (set), Jessica Bertine (lighting), Jessica Minnihan (costumes), and William Myers (sound).
