Sacramento Theatre Company is proud to kick off the 2021-2022 season of Who, What & Where with the regional premiere of Emily Manns’s 2019 play Gloria: A Life. A woman-led about Gloria Steinem’s rise from a girl from Ohio to the “world’s most famous feminist” to cultural icon.
This regional premiere opens October 6, 2021 on the Sacramento Theatre Company Main Stage. THE PLAY Gloria: A Life is a richly woven tapestry about one of the most inspiring and remarkable figures of our time. Five decades after Gloria Steinem began raising her voice for equality and championing the voices of others, Gloria’s voice continues to inspire those who came after her, forever changing the makeup of every area of the female experience—including politics, work, the family, and sexuality.
Gloria’s life’s work and philosophy on the necessity of conversation as a catalyst for change offer us all a path forward in a way that only the art of theatre can, through live and innate human connection.
Written by Tony Award-nominee Emily Mann, starring Sacramento favorite Jamie Jones as Gloria Steinem, and directed by STC Associate Artist Natasha Hause, Gloria: A Life features a diverse cast entirely made up of women, journeying through Steinem’s story with the distinct and influential voices of the Women’s Liberation Movement, second-wave feminism, and other iconic moments in Gloria’s fifty years in the public eye.
THE PRODUCTION STC’s first 2021-2022 production of Gloria: A Life is more than a play, it’s a conversation. An opportunity for the audience to participate in the shared experience of Gloria’s famed practice of talking circles. The play is one part a historical voyage of her over 50 years of activism, one part an intimate and interactive lightning bolt that ignites a social conversation between actors and audience.
