Hercule Poirot sleuths again! Agatha Christie’s dapper detective comes to the Woodland Opera House in a “live radio” adaptation by Sacramento playwright Bob Cooner. Agatha Christie’s “The Count and the Curse” will be recorded live in the historic theatre and presented online. “Fortunately, the Opera House refuses to be stopped by the pandemic,” the play’s director, Matthew Abergel, says. “The show must go on, right? And that’s what we’re doing, while still keeping everyone safe.”
The streaming presentation showcases detective Hercule Poirot in two of his earliest whodunnits, “The Adventure of the Italian Nobleman” and “The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb.” In the first mystery, Poirot and his stalwart companion, Capt. Arthur Hastings, investigate the death of the Italian Count Foscatini. In the second, they travel to Egypt to untangle a series of deaths supposedly caused by a mummy’s curse.
The plays will be performed and filmed live on stage at the historic Woodland Opera House in the style of a live radio broadcast, with actors holding scripts and standing at microphones. There will be live musical accompaniment created and performed by Dean Mora, as well as live sound effects created and executed by Jason Hammond. Craig Vincent will take charge of technical direction and videography. The cast features Darryl Strohl-de Herrera as that famously brilliant Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and Scott Martin as Captain Arthur Hastings. Other cast members taking multiple parts include Aaron Baikie-Rick, David Cross, Emily Delk, Rand Doerning, Jori Gonzales, and Skyler King.
“I’m a huge Agatha Christie fan and a particular fan of Hercule Poirot. A great deal of the fun of these mysteries is trying to arrive at the solution before Poirot does – and most of the time, that’s a pretty tall task. Poirot’s ‘little grey cells’ are famous for good reason!” playwright Bob Cooner says. “I’m thrilled the Opera House has decided to present Agatha Christie’s ‘The Count and the Curse’, and I hope it gives the audience a much-needed escape as they join Poirot on his intriguing adventures.”
You may select Individual for $10 per device (to watch on 1 computer, phone, or tablet) or Family/Group for $20 per device. There is also an option to make an additional donation to the theatre.
